Hickory shad around where I live are fun to catch on light fly and spoons. The biggest I have captured grow up to 19 inch. I recommend a spoon with a bigger hook, mostly treble. They don't care that the hook is there they will hit anything that moves when feeding. From shrimp to crab. As long as it shines and has a hook they will hit it.

When Stripes school that means there are bait fish. During early spring or winter, those fish going to be herring. Most likely what you are going to want to do is cast a 2 to 3 ounce jig into the school. Tip the jig with a tail and let it fall to the bottom and slowly reel up, taping the rod every two seconds. When it is warm and bigger bass are feeding on bunker. Throwing a popper is the best idea. With this setup the fish are going to be from 2 to 10 pounds, with the occasional 15 pounder.
